  2. The best secret to catch perch is to have an emerald shiner minnow laying on the mud bottom. Perch will feed off a dead minnow before chasing a suspended minnow above the lake bottom. Always have a snelled hook tied to the sinker and let the sinker rest on the bottom. Occasionally lift the line and be aware although no bite has been felt, the extra weight indicates a perch can be hanging on.
  3. Fishing the Allegany River and Kinzua Dam areas should be determined to the high rainfalls especially in Pennsylvania due to muddy waters.
  4. Starting from Point Breeze yesterday with my son and nephew aboard, we stopped several times after spotting small hooks on the bottom with our sonar resulting ln occasional perch, with a call from a neighbor, we went off Silver Creek 70 foot of water. Several boats out there were pulling a few perch out and we let out our anchor with 200 foot of scope. Suddenly about 11:30 AM, the bite turned on. With a bluebird sky and high sunlight the perch schools were moving to deeper water tp avoid the sun. Continuous catched of larger 12 to almost 15 inch perch were taken to about 3:30 PM, Things slowed down then and we pulled the anchor about 4:00 PM, The caych was 93 jumbo perch with 70 perch between 12 and 15 inches. Small emerald shiner minnows obtained frpm Ferry Street Bait store woked best, The noon hour tips were important,
  5. God article, you got it. The eastern basin is only affected off Dunkirk and Barcelona deeper waters.
  6. A "dead zone" has been documented for years now as organic materials decay on the deeper waters and consume oxygen from the waters,
  7. The coldest bottom waters can be oxygen deficient due to decay of planktons and other organic substances. That is why fish stack up off the bottom waters.
  8. NE winds change the thermocline levels. When you have them stay home and cut the grass or do some painting.
  9. The fisherman who claimed the fish was caught at a smaller lake was checked earlier in the day fishing in the reservoir by Seneca Conservation officer.
  10. A lot of muddy water from higher rainfalls lately,
  11. Kinzua walleye are Ohio River strain fish which grow larger than Great Lakes strain walleyes. That is why the New York State walleye record walleyes are from. The Ontario record walleye was caught in Thompson's Hole of the Niagara River by a shore fisherman. It was over 22 pounds and the catch was monitored by many observers. this was over eighty years ago though.
  12. Point Breeze RV Resort. Two bedroom mobile home, 18 foot Polar Craft boat/ 115 HP Yamaha, golf cart, private boat ramp on site, nearby golf, Casino, 30 minutes west of Buffalo. $47,000. Call Bob, 716-807-9831. Great Walleye, Perch and Bass Fishing. Between the Cattaraugus Creek and Sturgeon Point Marina. Swimming Pool and Recreation Hall.
  13. Finally after a week of easterly type winds, a good catch of larger walleye came in. In 81 foot of water, west of the Dunkirk stacks, a limit catch of 5 to 8 pound walleyes was taken. Using smelt sizes spoons on #3 setting Dipseys set out 150 foot of braid. The eastern basin is almost devoid of fish due to the upwelling of colder water from the wrong winds. Southwest winds should return this week and the fishing should turn back on.
  14. Remember the Pyramids were built on sand. It would be good to hear from a civil engineer what use could be made of that expensive dredged sand.
  15. Yellow and white perch, silver basss, whitefish, ciscoes, carp, catfish and others. A balanced harvest of all species is needed , Back in the mid 1950's the smelt that were stocked in Michigan, a foreign invader destroyed all the fishing including sport fishing, especially the blue pike, lake trout, whitefish and ciscoe population of the Great Lakes. In the mid 1960's American and Canadian trawlers began harvesting the smelt which were mainly shipped to Asian communities started controls. Also the Pacific Salmon stocking program did the needed control of the smelt and by the mid 1960's the walleye and perch sport fishing returned and the dead Lake Erie started o boom again. The cold water blue pike never returned as the smelt exterminated their reproduction.
  16. They use trap nets, not gill nets. Walleyes, Bass and other sport fish are released alive. The fish of the Lake Erie belong to all the people of New York, just not the sport fishing license harvesters. Commercial fishing is a business that supports all the residents of New York and other states. Canadian commercial fishermen export millions of dollars of Lake Erie fish to the USA annually. They laugh about the foolishness of USA regulations favoring our hook and line efforts.
  17. A ship loaded with foundry sand from Lake Michigan left yesterday for Buffalo. With all the sand dredged up from Sturgeon Point Marina this year, why could it not be sold here?
  18. Weekend walleye fishing were from out to 79 foot of water successful. Perch were also graphed on the bottom there. c
  19. Warm lake water temperatures have caused the perch to move to 71 foot and deeper depths. The western lake aters are too shallow now.
  20. With 75 degree surface temperature, the walleye catch dropped to colder water. From 300 degree course off Evangola Park in 71 foot of water and farther out and SW the walleyes were stacked below 50 foot to the bottom. Worm harnesses off riggers and Dipseys produced. Side planers were useless. You had to get deeper and near bottom was good out to 79 foot of water. High sun and blue bird sky slowed the action down and the bite picked up later after noon. Clouds and and evening bite were best. The best screen was 72 to 75 foot down, further out things slowed down.
  21. The near shore wind turbines at Lackawanna and Hamburg are already being rebuilt. The Hamburg turbines are only five years old. Maintaining off shore turbines is a lot more expensive, a lot more!
  22. Ohio has cut its perch catch limit to ten perch daily. Have we seen any perch problems here in New York waters of Lake Erie?
  23. I remember when the big push was for more Lake Erie Access. Turned out the State of New York owned the property at the mouth of the Cattaraugus. Some how it leaked out that the property was leased to a connected operator. Well maybe the state owns Sturgeon Point and it is leased to the Town of Evans which cannot run a "two car funeral".
  24. Caught over forty sheephead in thirty foot off the Evans Bar using crabs. Largest was 28 inches. Five break offs, good fishing day, lots of action.
