When I try for perch starting in late August, I use a 3/4-1oz buckshot spoon on the bottom instead of a sinker. It seems that every time out we land an eye or two on this set up. It is usually tipped with an emerald. The best luck with this technique has been straight out of Dunkirk. Funny thing though, the eyes have all come early in the morning. Never got one like this after around 8:30 or so.

Had a similar trip today. Took a little bit to find them but had our two man limit in less than two hours. Harnesses on lead core set 5 back and wire dipsey setting 3 out 90' worked the best. -

Last years great bite started with a long stretch of stable weather from the end of August through the first two weeks of September. Of course, I missed most of it by being in LA. -

I was one of the guys there. I arrived at 5:00 expecting the worse but no problems. In fact, I think there were less boats there than last Friday. There are plenty of fish, but nothing of any size. I hope the western basin fish migration gets closer for me to get offshore soon. -

I fished out around the 50-55' mark straight out the last few years but not until the last few days of July or first week of August. There still are a few older guys like me that go out and target perch out of Dunkirk. Our catches ranged from 50 to maybe a half dozen fish with a walleye or two thrown in. It was just a little too inconsistent for me to make the 120 mile drive there, but if you are in Buffalo, it might be worth it.

I have seen some great catches from Sodus lately. A lot better than the 6+ years of dink fest we have had in all the Ontario bays. I believe the high water and lack of boats has helped along with an upswing in the survival cycle. Give us some ice, and it will be like the old days.

I can jump in here and help. Up until the perch seemed to disappear about 6 years ago, ice fishing was pretty good on I bay. With the numbers and size of fish J Sparrow and I have caught in I bay this fall, I would say they are back and if we get ice it should be good. The one thing I do not know is if the perch will follow their traditional pattern and head to the area south of the 104 bridge. It is pretty hard to access the area north of the bridge where we have been boat fishing because the ice never really sets up there that well. You can park at the area known as the rod and gun club along the road on the southwest side with everyone else and head out. Be very careful though. There is a gas hole that used to form about 30-50 yds. straight out of the area where we parked and a few more scattered around out there. If you are careful, and we have a hard winter you should be ok. The fish in I bay were really nice size in the past. I have caught a lot of 14" perch ice fishing there. A few days before J.Sparrow fished ,I landed a 15 1/2" perch, and had kept a lot in the 10-12" class.

It was sloooow at the Cat today. Looked from 50-68' with only a few small scattered schools. We only kept about two dozen. I didn't see anyone hauling them in either. Boats did not even have seagulls around. Most of the fish we caught were small males. -

Is the cleaning station open at the Hanover launch? I usually go there.

If the weather forecast holds, I will be there. Lots of choices right now, but Erie is number one.

Great question and not an easy one to answer. First off, we are just coming off a down cycle. I used to catch perch at the water pump inlet in Johnsons cove just west of Pt Breeze and also in the lake at Gannet and Sodus in the summer time. They were always shallow - 6-10'. Not at all like Erie perch. Most importantly - habitat. We do not have a mud bottom. No insects to feed on. The summer perch I caught would feed on crayfish along the shore. As I said, we are coming out of a down cycle. The perch fishing has been pretty good from Rochester east in the bays and the mouth of the Genesee. The guys, and myself included , are more tight lipped about Ontario perch too. The perch here are very localized and can get overfished easily, I have seen this happen. The Erie perch are in much greater numbers and spread out . It is a lot easier to say they are off the Cat in 68' then at a particular spot in a particular bay off Ontario. There are plenty more reasons, but I hope this was a start.

I know it is a problem, but I have gotten used to it. A certain guide seems to think that there is a "five foot" rule, and I have seen him that close. Casting distance is ok and as Jimski says, more bait in the water keeps the fish around longer. I have found that most guys on Erie are courteous and respectful. I appreciate that. The stealth fishing is important if you find them and are all alone. Everyone is looking out there including me. The seagulls usually give you away. Bring a shotgun for them

Amazon, Fish USA or from the guys who market them from Canada. Don't go crazy for them just yet though. I have had good success with 3/4 oz buckshot spoons in silver. The perch and chartreuse colors did not seem to work. Ten Percent I am not sure when I am going. I just found some great buck sign in an area that I am the only one allowed to hunt and have to get a tree stand up pronto. Might give that a shot Thursday eve. Next week looks good to go though

Looks like that sting nose will help when we can't get niagaras. If anyone plans on searching out of the Cat next week, let me know and we will hook up.

The change in the weather probably will scatter the fish and mix things up for a while. We were out of the Cat today for our last walleye trip and scored our three man limit before noon. Dipseys and riggers parked around 78' over 85. Renoskis and a Gambler rig. -
Fished the Cat again today. What a difference two days can make. Water temp was 2 + deg higher and the fish I was pounding on some inside water got lockjaw. Tons of marks but tons of silvers too. Finally, after a two hour fruitless troll, we found them about a mile or two from the border and boxed out. Tried for perch but the water temp scared them out too. Could not find the bait pods or the perch and came in around 1:00. Out again tomorrow.

Fantastic. I have been looking in 72-74' and found a few . We have not fished for them long though but I will do the walleye first and the perch second tomorrow. Did you have live goldens or salted niagaras?

Got our two man limit in a couple hours out of the Cat. I shut her down and tried jigging for them with a bunch of different lures that all work in the western basin, but nothing here. Our fish came on rainbow renoskis and alewife pattern Michigan stinger. Riggers and dipseys. Just get it down there.

I saw tons of pinheads out of Dunkirk Wednesday. After boxing out on eyes today, we looked for perch. Found some in 78' got a quick dozen and came back to port. We were straight out of the Cat.

I did a lot of Lake O trolling for a long time as a captain and used a temp/speed troll at the ball. Absolute must for salmon. Not so much for erie. Everything I do is the same as Fishkiller, 1.9-2.1. I also attach the releases right to the ball. I would love to stack them like I did for salmon but walleyes have a tendency to tangle up two lines more than salmon. Ten Percent - rebuild that reel. I like the 47lc. They have held up for years. Just rebuild the drag washers now and then and lube.

I read the reports from the west end too. The lake is very different there. Shallow, and a lot more structure. The big thing is bait. There seems to be a lot more of it and right now there are very few walleyes there to compete for it. The shallow north ends of the finger lakes arte similar and I catch perch there all summer.

Lineman is right on on the perch . I looked for 2 hours out of Dunkirk Wednesday with only a handful of links to show for it. Weather changes next week Thursday. A week of cooler water should get them going.
