Took my grandson Malichite out front of Dunkirk today for some walleye action! Took us a little longer then normal to get 2 limits of eyes! 2 1/2 hours, but it was a NorthEast wind and bluebird sky.Still most of the eyes came from 35 ft down over 70 to 100 ft of water on stick baits at 1.6 mph.

In the near future we will be moving a trailered boat through all roadways of SBH with Vince from NYSPD looking to see if there are areas that are of need of improvement.

At this point we have to wait for the next EFAB Meeting to form a committee to walk thru the problems at the SBH Launch.A couple quick fixes are a sign way ahead just as you enter curbed area telling you all boats must stop at pull over get ready area ahead and on the launch docks signs telling you to move your boat to the end of the dock after launching so others can launch. There may be some minor curb removal in turning areas, but I do not think in the main road.

I also called and left a message with Vince's secretary to have Vince call me so we can discuss these issues.

Maybe for this year we can at least get a little more control over the launch & retrieval process by controlling the launchers to available ramps at the booth only when available, holding them in line until ramp is open.At least this will stop most of the bottle neck above ramps with 12 or more trying to launch all at the same time fighting for position.

I will take the requested changes for SBH Launch & Roadways to the Erie County Federation of Sportsman's Club's and will address the issues with Erie County Fishery Advisory Board as well.

Ciscokid,It will take way more then a handful of fishermen complaining,we need big numbers more then looking at this forum, with formal written letters from all Sportsmens Clubs in Erie County.
-
The launch belongs to NYS Parks Dept.,they are responsible for it alone.NY State Engineers designed the Launch without our input from the fishermen or Save Boat Harbor. We were asked to help with some issues after it was built. We have complained about the narrow roads in the past and have gotten no where.Collectively more may get done if it it became a ECFSC issue involving all the Sportsmans Clubs in Erie County. There also should be a wheel chair lift to load handicap people in and out of boats. Parking needs to be designated on corner of parking lot by fish cleaning station ,for those cleaning fish to park.Maybe a little dock wagon to roll coolers to fish cleaning station and return to lot.
-
Just getting the area where you leave the parking lot going into the curbed lanes widened by 25 ft would be a plus!

I will address this issue at next Erie County Fishery Advisory Board Meeting! The road in and out of the Safe Boat Harbor Launch is designed the way it is to slow the trailered boat traffic down to 10 mph.I have had no problem going thru that road maze.
My main problem is when the launch is busy ,the staff at collection booth need to have some control over number of launchers in at one time.If 4 ramps are for launching ,then only 4 rigs towing boats should be in those spaces. As one launch comes open the booth can let another in,not let 12 in at once jamming up the whole top of the launch where those trying to retrieve can't even get their trailers to the ramp to get out.I have seen it on a Saturday where it took 2 hours to get your boat out and on the trailer because of so many launching boats allowed in all at once.

The road in and out of the Safe Boat Harbor Launch is designed the way it is to slow the trailered boat traffic down to 10 mph.I have had no problem going thru that road maze.I'm a first time boat owner, so take that for what it's worth. I too have thought that the passages are narrow, but I have yet to hit them on the way in or out. I have a tandem trailer with a 21' boat in tow. When turning left or right, I always go to the opposite side close to the curb before turning the other way to navigate the turn and it's worked so far and I have an extended mid-size truck towing my boat. As far as the fish cleaning station is concerned, I have not had any problems yet, but I do wish they would make it easier to access it. The parking lot in which it is located is a permit lot, but sometimes I stop there quick in the early morning to use the restroom and leave the hazards flashing on my boat. After a day's catch, I usually try to park my boat a little closer, but always have to make the trek over to the station with my cooler. My friend told me that the curb on the exit is smashed due to trailers running over it, but I have not seen it yet up close.

The South Gap of Buffalo Harbor still has that big school of smaller walleye. We managed 12 keepers out of 61 caught, most were 14" ! Wind was kicking up 4 foot waves out in the lake, so we worked over the smaller eyes for the day.
