  3. On one parcels they are building a multi tenet building to lease out space! So there is no reason they can't make green space for fishing and hiking along Smokes Creek to Lake Erie as part of the whole restoration of the land area.Lackawanna Residents deserve some access to the Lake Erie Shoreline!

But these industrial projects usually get tax breaks for the next how ever many years so when you break the numbers down only a few make money.

  4. Yes ,they only seem to care about added tax dollar collection thru Industrial Development! We will not stop our pursuit for Lake access here, will start pressure on NYSDEC for green space along Smokes Creek, with a Public Park where creek enters Lake Erie.Maybe Water Keepers might help in this one also!We have to raise awareness to Lackawana Public about how they have all that Lake Front and No Access.
Jim,it was a pleasure finally meeting you in person.

Millions of dollars for private industrial development. Nothing for public community use. The guys in the suits know how milk the public treasury while the local aid for the community is nothing.

  5. Well turns out meeting was about just the area infront by NY Route 5 for Industrial Development ,none of the areas in back at waterfront. Jimski2 was able to make his point about water access.I reminded them about the Smokes Creek eco system and the important walleye ,bass & steelhead spawning habitat that needs to be protected above all in any rezoning & land development. Also asked for green space access along Smokes Creek for Fishing!

  7. You need to go to tonight's meeting on Bethlehem Steel Site Project Update and join others asking for more boat access!

Before the SBH was opened my father kept our 18 foot boat moored in the Union Ship  Canal next to the bridge.  Launching was done by the Pennsylvania Ore Dock crane which lifted the boat into the canal and the bridge tender was our watchman.  The costs were a share of the blue pike catches. Anyway the canal is ripe for floating boat docks and a launch ramp. The land nearby has been remediated by tax credit use so it parking is accessible. Public safety needs a railing fence to protect falling into the deep ship channel. Larger boats could be launched with a mobile lift crane. If the state can not use the boat registration fees, trailer registration fees and sales tax revenues for the use by boaters then it is time for the money to be returned to the boaters.

  8. I run the Buffalo Pedal Tour Pedal Boat all summer up as far as Red Jacket County Park. The number of walleye marked up and down the Buffalo River are unbelievable!

One day in the summer I walked the shoreline at the foot of Catherine Street. I saw bass everywhere. No one really knows the fishery we have there. The Buffalo Creek watershed is a secret in our back yard.

  9. I have seen fishermen Launch small boats off a gravel area at Red Jacket Riverfront Erie County Park off Smith Street.

Glad to hear people discussing this matter.  I have always advocated to my local government  for a  small hand  launch in the Buffalo River but they must confuse what I said for kayak launches.  There is never a place to launch  in the spring when harbors are still iced up. Decent stealhead runs as well as your bullhead and catfish. Never the less another launch anywhere would be nice.

  10. 6 pm Dec 17th at St.Anthony's Church,306 Ingham St.,Lackawanna,NY 14218

    Mostly Muskies:
Larry...in what building is the Lackawanna meeting that you mentioned? That's the first I heard about it & am interested in it. Regardless of where a launch is built, for the miles of Lake Erie shoreline we have it's pathetic that there isn't more access. A launch or improvement project at Hamburg is out because that property is owned by the Locksley Park Homeowners Assoc & leased to the Town for $1/yr with the stipulation that it only be used by Hamburg residents. If grant money is used, it has to become open to the public, which will violate the lease agreement.
I like your idea of the Union Ship Canal; protected from waves, wouldn't sand up, deep water, out of the SBH traffic pattern and probably the lowest cost of all the alternatives

  11. When you find the funding source for a new marina & launch around Woodlawn Beach or Smokes Creek let us know! We have been trying for years to get Sturgeon Marina wall built to keep sand from filling in opening. All the parties to be have tried!SBH is only about 1/2 mile longer by boat to any of the destinations you mentioned. I give you credit your persistence toward your dreams are there, but money is not there in NY State!

It is a lot longer boat ride to Seneca Shoals, Meyers Reef, Eighteen Mile Creek, Wanakah Shoals, and Woodlawn Bay Area where the early night walleyes are. The bass fishing starts there also.

  12. One problem at SBH Launch is the Launch responsibility is part of Safe Boat Harbor Marina. They collect Launch Fees, that is not much after subtracting Empire Pass holders and Free Monday to Friday Oldtimers! They probably just cover the worker that collects fee wages.

I been saying that for years got to have common sense your boat should be ready to launch when its your turn
I like going to sp they guys there make sure everyone is ready and will help you if needed

  13. Where is this Walleye Club Access they have ,so they do not care about access? Everyone knows we need and wants more Lake Access. But living in NY State funding is a big problem, especially for building a complete marina and launch where 100's of Millions are in play. The extra drive from Woodlawn Beach to SBH is not that far in reality.

Sturgeon Point is nothing but a sand trap as is the Hamburg site. Woodlawn Beach launched hundreds of small boats till the Town closed it off. So Southtowns boaters are stuck with long distant travel to access the lake. The Walleye Club members have their access so they are not motivated any more for access sites. The thirty mile drive to the Cattaraugus Creek sites is a waste of precious time and gasoline. Let us realize that we need something else on our Lakeside waters.

  14. Then you get that one or two people that stop there truck & boat right in the middle of backing area! Proceed to take 20 minutes taking off cover, getting ropes & bumpers ready and rigging every fishing pole and setting them in rodholders.Holding everyone up to get around them, instead of getting ready in proper area ahead of time. You can't fix stupid so you need older people at entry shack that are not afraid to go direct these people!
