The Canadian commercial fishery take thousands of tons of smelt annually but American waters are untouched. They are the most dangerous invasive species predator in the lake. Yet we ignore their presence. Not only emerald shiners are their forage they decimate the fry and fingerlings of all species.

The smelt population is on the decline
There were times where you could catch all you wanted in the upper river . Not any more
Same holds true in the lower river

Zebra mussels first showed in the early to mid 80's so I don't think this shortage is related to them. I've seen in past years the problem we are having now. I believe it is cyclical as everything else in nature. Just my opinion.......
It’s take time, even the zebra Mussels had a effect

Hey Wojo..... i think the problem is called: "43 million walleye in the lake right now and who knows how many perch, bass, trout & salmonoids that all consume emerald shiners for breakfast, lunch & dinner"
Back in the early 50’s when you had Cazillion blue pike. You had all the minnows you wanted. It’s the zebra muscles. And gobies that are finally taking effect on the eneralds

brain Higgins had a lot to do with the sbh he told the nfta to updated or sell it
Need the SWA to put pressure on the politicians.
They have 200 members that live in the area. It they threaten the politicians to make changes to the marina. It would happen

If interested, I have a dozen 7ft GX2 rods for sale.
Otherwise like mentioned above, FishUSA has plenty to choose from
Tom Marks from gr8 lake fishing adventure would make them for you. Just give him the info in the riddance. He is very reasonable and does a professionally job, just like his charter business

I got a response & they said it needs to be in the budget & voted on. Seeing how they just voted on the budget it would have to be brought up next year.
That’s what they always say. It never gets done. We need the SWT to put pressure on our politicians. It’s the biggest organization of its kind. I guess we need to put pressure in them to get more interested in boat launches instead of their own profit agendas

There is typically perch in the small boat harbor this time of year or you can try the canal at squaw island next to the lock.
No bait no perch

We are in trouble
Minnows should be plentiful . Something has happened to them.

Where is out South Town Walleye Association. Itl has a strong membership. And the politicians will listen to them. I guess they are only interested in their Walleye Tournament

Both great ideas Jim. If we only had a politician with a vision to push it through. Could use some of King Andrews Buffalo billions money. Wish we could get the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen involved.

Yep - it’s definitely a design flaw. Someone will dredge it after all the ice is gone and the winter run off is over
Sent from my iPhone using Lake Erie United Mobile App
The town does not have the money to dredge this year. It might be closed this year. We need to call their supervisor to put pressure on her . Being closed would be devastating to us boat fishermen

Sure would be nice to get on sodus this winter....or anywhere for that matter

Lake Erie has a higher fertilization level from all the agriculture activity, higher human population contributing more nutrients. Average shallower depth contributes a greater production area for perch. It is the greatest food fish producing Lake in the world. The perch numbers are controlled by generous sport fishing quotas and a quota limit on commercial fishing operations with international cooperation by the concerned agencies. Still there are boom and bust harvest years that we end up having to live with.

There just as many perch in Lake Ontario. As lake Erie
The only reason is that perch are not targeted as much as Erie
I can go out and catch my limit at will on Ontario

Gotchas and Jigging raps are both balance jigs. They get their action from their balance point and body shape. Jigging raps are at their best fished vertically. Gotchas excel when they are out at an angle (cast/drift). When it is super windy and tough to slow down your drift, the gotchas really shine.
Sting nose jigs work the best
