  1. Once again, we did not have the successful outing that others have reported. We launched 9/20, Thursday at the catt, at 615 pm. Went straight out to 77 FOW. based on the information here I put out a 5 color leadcore on an inline board, with a harness, and a 10 color core on an inline board with a bay rat. Then we put a dipsey out each side. Through the night they were switched often with various stick baits and harnesses. We also had the riggers down with spoons, harnesses, and a smithwick perfect 20, etc. We only got two walleyes and two silver bass, and we fished until 930 pm. Saw lots of hooks on the screen, at times it was unreal. Cannot figure out what we are doing wrong. Tried speeds from 1.2 to 2.7 and everything in between. Guys coming in when we launched said they had their limit. I wonder why with so many walleyes down there you can't just jig for them? Tried that last time, no good.

  2. Fishkiller16. I didn't know you were a Charter Captain. I want to go on a "learning charter" I just upgraded to a 22 foot Grady White and I had fish hawk, autopilot, downriggers, planer mast etc,. What I need is knowledge. This is my second summer on erie and Ontario and I know we should be doing better, when I see reports like your where you got 60, but we only caught 6! Please message me with price and availability for the next week or so. I have two others that will likely come along. I need help. Thanks, Garry.

Did over 60 in 6 hrs off the Catt today. We fished 8 till 2 , and it never slowed down. We fished outside of the pack all day. We selectively kept our 4 man limit. Fished the last 4 days and caught almost 200 total. Not a day in the last month that we didn't limit out. No sign of a major weather change coming up, should be good for a while yet.

and thats why your called Fishkiller!  I wish I had your expertise. I also tried to stay away from everyone. Maybe I  should have went farther out, but we were almost to the Canadian Border, and then it started getting shallower. Went from 80 then started to go back up to 69 before we turned south again.

I hear you garrymny. Was out this Monday and marked what seemed liked thousands. Same today but I ran a little different program and smoked them. Got our limit in 1.5hrs. Alewife spoons with meat on dipsy 200 hundred back did 90% of the work for us. Couldn't keep the dipsy's in the water.

Thanks for the tip. What brand is the alewife spoon? When you say meat do you mean you put a crawler on the treble hook? Also what time were you fishing? Thanks again.

  5. Fished off catt today Sept 17, Sunday. Never saw so many fish. Only caught 6. Trolled from 77 to 80 fow. Tried spoons, stick baits and harnesses. Fished 7 am to 1200. I feel like we caught the tail end of the feeding, as didn't catch anything after 9. I wonder what kind of harness folks are using Willow leaf, or round blade? Any tips are appreciated, because with the thousands of Walleye we trolled through I think we should have done better. I must be missing something? I tried fish hawk speeds from 1.5 to 2.3. we even drifted for a while with crawlers and minnows.

Fished off the Catt. 9/5 short solo trip 1-4. Fished from 80-90ft. Only managed 1 good Walleye about 4lbs. Was pulling harnesses caught about 8 Perch.Every time I checked my riggers I was pulling a Perch or a whitey or my bait was gone.Tried sticks for awhile to no prevail.

Not good to hear. We are (were) going to try the lake off the Catt creek on Sunday.

GarryNY...did you keep any lures/baits in that 20 foot from surface depth? I know it may be hard to when all the reports are 50 to 80 ft down. But when bait is high in water column there usually seems to be some big fish up high after that bait

yes we fished the entire water column. Had one rod with just a diving plug on it, probably went down 10 to 15 feet. Tried riggers at 30 feet, all the way to 90. Tried divers with 150 to 300  feet of line out.   kept speed at 1.4 to 1.7. I guess that may have been too slow?

  8. We went off Dunkrik today Aug 30. Went out to 105 FOW. Only caught 2  walleyes about 17 inchers. Tons of bait balls on the screen, and seemed to be lots of fish too, but could not get them to take.  fish were from 20 feet to 80 feet down. Water temp 71 degrees the entire way to 100 FOW. No temp difference at all. Lots of boats out there today. We fished from 80 to 105 FOW. Could not break the secret code. No thermocline.

  9. 8/4 out of Sturgeon point. I was drifting for walleyes in 60 -62 FOW. We caught 3 nice perch on crawler harnesses in a about a 200 foot section of our drift . I guess I should have thrown anchor at that point??? We saw lots of fish (or bait) clouds on the bottom. Some bigger fish arches suspended at 30 and also on the bottom. I checked with the Fish Hawk and the water temp was 74 surface and 72 at 60 feet!  So, I dont kow what to think of all this. I am a beginner on erie, usually troll for salmon on Lake Ontario.

Got up, read the reports and decided to make the two hour trip to Dunkirk. We waited for the rain to pass and left late arriving at 10:30. Fort all excited because boats were on there way in with their limits.  Not to be. Someone turned off the switch. Trolled from 11;00 - 3:00 and landed 5 fish with two throwbacks. Way to many sheepies and a few silvers. Used wire dispel, riggers and lead core but could not get them going. Best picture was at 82' west of the harbor. Usually I am a day late, but three hours -Yikes.

Yes, the best day to fish is always "yesterday". Every time I go, I find out I should have went yesterday.

  11. Thank you Sparrow. I just read what the Sanders Fishing Guide Book says about Lake Erie. I do know it is a good fishery, I guess I was just getting disgusted. I am going to keep trying until I get it. My sister down in PA wants me to take her so I think I will take her out of NorthEast, PA one of these weekends. I live within 30 mins of SBH, and I can be Olcott in 45 mins to an hour. Lucky to be close to both Lakes.

  12. Oh my gosh, I've been called a troll, and a quitter, and who knows what else, by people who do not know me AT ALL. I fished out of Erie PA when I was a lad with my Grandfather, wonderful memories. Now, a couple years ago, I finally got a boat  again and I am trying my best to learn the lake, and the tactics and be successful.  I was just venting my frustration, that was echoing another fisherman's report of no luck, (although he didn't say it was dismal!). You guys really need to lighten up, and stop taking it so personal. We all get down from time to time, don't we?  Maybe I had a bad day. I have been watching and reading and checking this forum for a year, and only recently joined. I did not realize the recency of its formation, nor the low number of members, compared to the LOU site, so I'm sure that does account for some of the differences. On second thought, I did some more checking, and there is some very good information here, so I do stand corrected. But not as far as fishing reports. Not much to go on. You look at a report, and then you look at the date and it is from a year or more ago. Even a month is too old when you are trying to get a starting point for tomorrow. So, in my humble opinion it is lacking in that respect, again, maybe because of the newness and low membership. I do not need someone to hook the fish on my line, as was stated, I am just looking to find a starting point when I go out, when I read the reports.  I would love to find success on Erie, because I like walleye and perch to eat much better than salmon. But so far, I have not had any luck, and I don't see any evidence of people catching many either. You check the papers, the internet, you tube, and there is not much to go on, and from what I see this year, it is mediocre when you do see a recent  report. Maybe they stay to the west until later in the year? I do share information after my trips to help others when I can. And I do anything I can to make the most of the little time I have to fish. I am really sorry I got off on the wrong foot. Oh, and lastly, thanks to some of you for the words of encouragement.

  13. I pretty much gave up on Lake Erie after making a dozen trips with nothing. Now I go for Salmon and Steelhead in LO. Sad, all I have ever heard is how great Erie Fishing is, an I finally got a boat again  last year  and it is dismal on Lake Erie. Not only that, compared tot he Lake Ontario United Forum, this Erie Forum is junk as far as sharing of knowledge and fishing reports.
