2021 @ “The Catt”

Recommended Posts

Fished west of the creek today from 65 - 80 fow.  We ended up with 17 walleyes, plus a couple perch.  Fish were caught bottom bouncing, off downriggers, and 8 & 10 color lead core.  If you plan to fish wormharnesses take plenty of worms.  The silver bass were also biting and we went thru over 40 nightcrawlers. Once we were out of worms we tried stickbaits but only managed a perch and a short walleye (our 4th).  Overall a great day of fishing.

Ran due west out of the Catt today to 70 to 80 FOW from 8 to 2. Managed 3 nice Walleye, a good size perch and a 7+lb trout (nice fight too) most on a 3" jointed Fire tiger Rapala. Speed was between 1.8 and 2.2 SOG, with the wind at our backs. The finder showed the marks were down between 60 and 70 ft, not quite on the bottom, and that is where we found the bite. The down-rigger gave us the best control in the 1-3 ft chop before it settle down, but then they bite was off too... A fun day to be out on the lake!

Saturday my friend and I went to 70 ft of water between Evangola and res windmill.
Nine in the box.
We caught 20 fish, lots of dinks.
Pretty rough for two guys and Mr. Garmin.
Like a washing machine out there, love it!
Fire tiger, as always worked the best.
Nine pounder was the cherry on top!
Big one was on ten colors of lead, and was fun!
Bills shut out Miami! Great weekend!

Spent entire week at sunset rented cottage there. What a crap week. Winds every day kept us off the water. We went out trying it but 2 days off shore winds which were supposed to be under 1 foot we found 2 1/2 footers out 60 ft. Not one fish suspended no baitfish  couple bumps on bottom but why bother rigging up when it's a baron wasteland.  I refused to go out to 80fow due to waves. My boat isn't capable of handling 4 footers.  I'm throughly disgusted.

Don't feel like you have to run that far out on Erie if you are in a smaller boat. Walleye are not trout/salmon. They will sit and feed in warmer water if there is food there. We never fished deeper than 40 fow all summer and we caught fish consistently out of all three of the westernmost ports in NY with many limits.  Even with surface temps approaching 80 degrees at times. E01419B1-95E7-4990-B02C-CDA6AB202BC7.thumb.png.1dbb83370c5f88911038f97ca8b54971.pngC0AAA6F9-AD95-4497-95D2-5267BA905C32.thumb.jpeg.71b1770dc04390fc87d49eb7fa679479.jpeg6361791A-C628-4E9A-9ED8-A211C4DDA5A4.thumb.png.19e45e54d13139f6e37b07a315797d5d.png18C00E79-38AB-488B-8363-FC87A35385C2.thumb.png.dd5565c81fb01edc6038529a8e2343a7.png

THX FOR THE INFO NICE PICTURES VERY DETAILED REPORT MUCH APPRECIATED. I LEARNED SOMETHING I NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT X AMOUNT OF WALLEYES STAY THAT SHALLOW ALL SUMMER. WE USUALLY START OUT OF THE SMALL BOAT HABOR AND 50% OF THE TIME  BY MID AUGUST OR EARLIER WE ARE MAKING THE MOVE TO BARCELONA OR THE CATT FISHING 60' TO 80' MOSTLY TROLLING BOTTOM BOUNCERS. YOUR IS THE FIRST REPORT I'VE SEEN WITH THIS KIND OF STRATEGIC INFO EVER VERY COOL. WE DID HAVE A COUPLE OF TRIPS A FEW YEARS AGO THAT THE 1ST TIME  WE WENT OUT  WE STARTED DEEP WITH POOR RESULTS SO WE STATED TO TROLL IN AND GOT A FEW IN 60' THEN GOT INTO 45' AND WOW THEY WERE STACKED IN THERE. I GUESS WHEN I GO FISHING AGAIN I'LL JUST LOOK FOR THE BOAT CLOSEST TO SHORE JIGGING OR DRIFTING AND IT WILL PROBABLY BE YOU. IN THE MEANTIME MY BUDDY AND I ARE DRIVING OUT TO COLORADO FOR A GUIDED ELK HUNT. STAY HEALTHY, GOOD FISHING TIGHT LINES. :emoticon-0100-smile:

My first trip out on Erie in a couple months took out a father and daughter team they had an absolute ball. They're used to going out of the small boat harbor in a tiny boat spending much of the day catching nothing. Did real good right out of the gate 73 feet of water out to 79 feet of water straight out of port a little towards Angola. Ended with 13 only one was small all the rest were between 22 and 27 in these were our best baits the spoon is custom painted from Scott reel rage. Downriggers 71 down and Dipsy divers on a to setting 200 feet sub troll speed 1 and 3/4.20210919_084820.jpg20210919_074644(0).jpg20210919_185749.jpg

With the lake surface water temperature drop to below 65 degrees, the walleyes will be nearer the surface. With plankton and bait now near the surface waters also due higher dissolved oxygen content of surface water due to wave actions, you will not see them on your sonar as your boat spooks them away. Side planers with lures on top along with jets to keep your lures higher on turns work now. Just because they do not show on your sonar screen, be aware the sonar signal is straight down below, not off to the side and on top of the water column.
