Big Boards or In Line?

I’ve been running in line planer boards for several years now. I have never run the big boards. Is there an advantage to big boards off a mast or arch? Anyone who can share their experience would be greatly appreciated.

If your running three lines or more, big boards are easier to manage. Likewise, if you have a novice crew, big boards are easier to reset. Inlines are easier to get out past an outside dipsy. Other than that, its a personal preference.

Misdirection is right on.  Big boards easier when you have different people on board.  Bigger boats have room to store boards, mast, planer reels.  For smaller boats with less storage, in lines are a better option.  Both are very effective and what works for your crew and your boat is the best choice.

I prefer the big boards and a clean release... no board to take off

If I’m pulling lead or copper I use the big boards. If I’m pulling plugs I use in lines.

[Misdirection]

First time i saw inlines in use was on Lake Michigan back in the mid 90's. They were the old foam yellowbirds where they were clipped onto the line with a swivel on the back side. So they stayed slid down the line until you netted the fish. It was something seeing a king break water with a yellowbird attached!
